1st Kokan United Carom Tournament

Kokan United Kuwait, successfully organized the 1st Doubles Carom tournament on Friday, 29th March 2013 at Kohinoor House, Fahaheel. Kokan United is an association of Muslims resident in Kuwait hailing from Raigad, Ratnagiri, Thane and Sindhudurg districts of Maharashtra, India. The tournament was organized by KU Sports Committee making the tournament an enjoyable event for all. This was the first time that a carom tournament was organized for Kokanis on such a large scale. The response was overwhelming. 16 teams (doubles) took part in the day-long tournament. There were some keenly contested matches enjoyed by players and audiences alike.

Farid Takey and Afzal Rawoot  won the championship defeating Azeem Dhansay and Anwar in an nail biting final that was decided on super board after both teams tied on 17 after the allotted 10 boards. Farid and Afzal had earlier defeated Saleh brothers and Azeem and Anwar had got better of Nadish and Tauseef in the semi finals. After the scores were level after ten boards, the super board break was taken by Anwar. Both pairs displayed excellent skills and played exquisite shots in the deciding board. In a tense moment of the finals, Farid had the striker with the queen and one coin from each team. In a sheer battle of nerves, Farid took the queen and the cover to end the tournament on a note enjoyed by every spectator to the fullest. Nadish and Tauseef defeated Saleh brothers to clinch the third place.

KU General Secretary, Mohsin Rakhangi welcomed the players and audience. Winner’s cash prize to Farid and Afzal was given by KU Vice President , Jalil Kazi for Food Inn, Salmiya and the runners up cash prize was given to Azeem and Anwar by the other sponsor, Superfast Cargo and Couriers. KU vice presidents Mushtaq Dalvi and Munir Thakur gave away the winners and runners up cups to the two team. He lauded the efforts of Atif Banderkar, Faisal Mukadam, A/Rahim Jalgaonkar, Tawfiq Mukadam, Sharaf Mukadam and other members of KU for hosting a successful event. He stressed on Kokanis to come forward and get involved into community activities as it not only helps the under-privileged members of the community but has a greater reward from Allah, Almighty as well.
