From Darkness to Light

MUMBAI: When you walk down the potholed roads and unpaved streets of Bhiwandi, often called India's Manchester, you're struck by the fact that urban planning has completely bypassed this textile town. And then you enter the sprawling campus of G M Momin Women's College, the only college for girls in the 1.2 million-strong town, and lo and behold, it's almost a different world.

In the midst of infrastructure-starved, hopelessly underdeveloped Bhiwandi , the college stands out as an oasis of hope, a centre of excellence. The University of Mumbai acknowledged this when it bestowed the Best College Award on Momin College recently, an award it shares with Mumbai's Somaiya College.

"We are all glad that the university acknowledged our efforts. It has enthused us immensely,'' says an excited Kamala Balasubramanian, the principal, seated in her first-floor , trophy-lined chamber in the college's impressive main building.

Catering mainly to girls from middleclass and lower-middle-class families (loom workers, rickshaw and taxi drivers and daily wage earners) in the town and neighbouring villages, the college has inspired hope in those for whom there are few inspirational characters.

This is a major achievement for Kokani Muslims especially girls. Kokani girls need more support to complete education. Although there is a good scope for them, cultural hurdles allow only a handful of Kokani girls to pursue further education. These articles are a solid proof of how the education of female Kokani population is now changing, even in remote or economically backward regions.
